Apple's iOS 27 update is wide; its new Siri is not

Apple has released iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and its other annual platform updates. The important buying and updating detail is the split between broad OS support and the much narrower hardware list for Siri AI and Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s annual software release can look reassuringly democratic at first glance. iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 are free updates for a substantial list of older devices, while macOS Golden Gate 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27 landed alongside them on September 14.

That is the good news. The more useful news is that an iPhone being eligible for iOS 27 does not make it eligible for the headline feature. Siri AI and the newer Apple Intelligence tools require Apple Intelligence-capable hardware. This is the real fork in the road for anyone deciding whether a familiar phone is still enough.

Apple’s own release information puts iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on iPhone 11 and later, among other supported iPads. MacRumors’ release coverage identifies the smaller AI list: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16, 17 and 18 model, plus M-series iPads and the A17 Pro iPad mini. Ars Technica likewise describes the context-aware Siri overhaul as the flagship feature across the new platforms other than tvOS.

Two eligibility lists, two very different experiences

What you wantEligible hardware, based on Apple’s and launch coverageWhat that means

The distinction is easy to miss because Apple’s rollout tells one big ecosystem story. For daily use, though, it matters more than another round of interface polish. An iPhone 11 owner can receive a current OS; that same owner cannot turn the release into the new, more capable Siri experience through a settings toggle.

The sensible way to update

First, update for the platform you actually own—not for a feature your hardware cannot run. Apple says the releases are available now, and the company’s security-release index gives the supported-device breakdown. MacRumors notes that launch-day availability may take time to propagate, so a missing download in the first hours is not necessarily a problem.

Second, do not confuse a broad compatibility promise with a recommendation to install immediately on every work-critical device. Major releases change core behavior. Back up first, allow time for app and accessory updates, and keep an older macOS version in mind if a vital utility depends on it. That is especially true for Macs: Apple’s current macOS 27 list is Apple-silicon only, while Apple is continuing security releases for older macOS branches.

Third, treat Siri AI as a capability check, not an upgrade mandate. If your current phone is eligible for the OS but not the AI stack, iOS 27 can still be worthwhile for the normal release improvements and ongoing support. Buying new hardware solely to unlock an assistant only makes sense if the assistant changes work you actually do—not because it is the loudest item in a launch presentation.

For context on how Apple had been positioning the assistant before release, read our analysis of the iOS 27 beta’s Siri-focused direction. The final availability list gives that earlier story its practical conclusion: Apple has made the software update broad, but the new intelligence layer is a hardware generation marker.

Bottom line

iOS 27 is not a single experience distributed evenly across every supported device. It is a generous operating-system update paired with a selective AI upgrade. Update eligible hardware for the software and security path; then check the Siri AI requirements before expecting the release’s headline changes. That small bit of skepticism will save far more disappointment than any feature tour.
